Taking part in Young Tradition Vermont does more for Hannah Beth Crary than give her an opportunity to play music.
“It’s a community,” said Crary, who plays fiddle and relishes the chance to exchange ideas with fellow musicians in Young Tradition Vermont. “I live in Fairfax and I was the only person really in my high-school graduating class that did traditional music. It’s a novel thing to everyone else in school, but it’s really isolating otherwise. You’re not the cool kid dancing to Justin Bieber.”
The organization is more than just a community to Mark Sustic, the man who lives just down the road from Crary in Fletcher and created Young Tradition Vermont. He compares Young Tradition Vermont to a family, one that adds to its core each year with new musicians who have either performed with the group or studied with some of its participants.
The family gets together every year at this time for a Young Tradition Vermont reunion concert. That changes for 2014 when the number of concerts doubles to two, with the first performance Friday in Burlington and the second Saturday in Stowe.

And if he does, it’s an award that Conti will happily share with his local crew.Andre Maquera of West Street Digital in Fairfield was guitarist and engineer for the album. “He’s amazing — talented and personable, funny, just a delight,” enthuses Conti. He also credits Maquera with helping to find other Vermont musicians, including whistle player Timothy Cummings of Monkton and young fiddler Hannah Beth Crary, a student at the University of Vermont. “She was just 17 years old when we did the album,” Conti marvels. “She’s incredibly gifted.”
